A Dog in the Road

Today's Bible Verse: 2 Thess 3:3-4 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

I remember when I first graduated college. I was already married with a baby son. I had an education degree but full time teaching jobs where I lived were scarce. For a few years then I did my best to make ends meet by substituting as much as possible. I would get up early each morning and hope for the phone to ring. A call meant work and every penny counted. On one particularly cold morning I got a call to work at a grade school 15 miles away. Only a light snow coated the roads so I wasn’t worried about the trip. What I didn’t realize, though, was that water from the previous day’s rain had frozen on a patch of the road before the snow covered it. This was on a part of the road that curved around the edge of a mountain. Going off on one side of the road would land you in a ditch but going off the other could send you over the side of the mountain.

As I approached the dangerous spot I was going faster than I should. I wanted to make it to the school before the classes started. Just before I reached it, however, I saw a dog walking in my lane of the road. I braked early to avoid hitting the pooch and then was about to speed up again when I hit the black ice. Thankfully, the angel with paws had made me slow down enough that I was able to steer the car back towards the ditch and away from the edge of the mountain curve. I only needed a tow instead of a trip to the hospital or mortuary. I guess God wasn’t quite ready for me to leave this life yet.

Albert Einstein said, "God doesn’t play dice." This is true for the world and for our lives. As I look back upon that day I can see God’s loving handiwork in it. I think He still had more for me to learn and do in this life. I just pray that I don’t waste a moment of it. I pray that I make everyday I have left a loving gift to my Heavenly Father who made me. May you do the same.

Who Needs Seatbelts! Sweet Sacrifice, Part 1

Today's Bible Verse: Heb 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess his name.

Christmas has just passed and we can finally take some sweet, relaxing breaths of air. It seems that with each passing year, Christmas becomes more and more hectic. I wonder if this has more to do with the fact that I've now reached the upper echelon of my life, or if it's really that society is making it more hectic?

In any case, while we are shopping for those on our list, some of us make bigger sacrifices than others. My oldest son, for example, is going to be part of a mission trip to Kenya where he will be helping build a kitchen for an orphanage. These kinds of endeavours don't come cheap, but they surely are worthwhile sacrifices. And there are other, even bigger sacrifices. The biggest one I have ever experienced is the one where Jesus left His Heavenly kingdom to be born in a meagre manger in Bethlehem. Would we have been willing to do the same, especially with Jesus' destiny in mind?

How can we show gratitude to such a loving God? What kinds of sacrifices are pleasing to Him? This series entitled "Sweet Sacrifices" will look into that matter. Enjoy!

Anyone who takes advantage of the local public transit in Nassau, Bahamas, quickly learns how to pray and how to praise! First of all none of the Jitneys have seatbelts. The most daring seat to take (I had to take it twice, as it was the only seat left for some reason) is right next to the driver on his left (Yes they have their cars figured out backwards!).

The only protection between the fast moving road and yourself is the large, extra-thin windshield. Yikes!!! With all the braking and turning, it doesn't matter how you try to brace yourself, you are left feeling like a punching ball. And boy do I have a lot more respect for these!

In addition, the concentration of most drivers is divided between their driving and any number of other equally worthwhile activities, such as counting money (mostly one dollar bills), making calls on their cell phones to everyone living in this exotic place, selling Cds, etc. They have taken the meaning of multi-tasking to a much higher level! Unfortunately, this ability is far from desirable to their passengers, especially the foreign kind!

And don't expect for them to drive slowly! This is a completely foreign concept to them. As you are tossed from your left to your right, from the front to the back, and then back up front again, you literally feel like you are on a roller coaster, only without any restraints to keep you in one piece!

To be honest, we enjoyed these kinds of rides, as it gave us a great taste of the Bahamian way of life. In fact, the more we took the Jitneys, the more we found ourselves want to ride them. I guess they are addictive! Nonetheless, each time we stepped out of a Jitney, we found ourselves praising God that the transportation He provided left us in one piece!

The Bible encourages us to praise God through Jesus at all times, which would mean in the good times as well as in the bad times. It is referred to as a sacrifice!

"Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess his name." (Heb 13:15 NIV)

If you don't feel like praising at times, consider that it is a worthwhile sacrifice, no matter what. Not only will it benefit yourself, as it will swing your mood to the "good" side, guaranteed, but you will, at the same time, give glory to the One who really cares about you! It's a win-win situation no matter how you look at it, isn't it?

If you have problems with this, may I encourage you to take a walk around your neighbourhood early in the morning or late in the evening. Listen attentively as you do so, and you will notice that some creatures praise God no matter what the circumstance! Birds are truly amazing, and we sure can learn one or two things from them. But why wouldn't they sing praises to the Creator? They are provided for, and they have another day to look forward in the companionship of their Maker!

You still have problems with this? Then it is time to fly to the Bahamas and take a ride on a Jitney. You will be amazed how fast you will learn the power of praising the Lord!

Star Struck

Today's Bible Verse: Psalm 89:6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?

Taking out the garbage on cold winter night can be an amazing experience.

I love winter nights. Last evening, as I was wheeling the garbage bin to the front yard, I looked up at the sky and was immediately overawed. Thousands of stars were dazzling like beautiful diamonds and even although it was very cold, I just stood there like a schoolboy, gaping and gazing at the glittering constellations. No matter how often I see them, I am totally amazed. I guess that the right phrase is ‘star struck,’ but it has nothing to do with the movies.

My neighbors must think I’m crazy. They probably hear me trundle out the bin to the street and then watch me from behind their blinds. “There’s that loony Scotsman, standing in the street again, looking up at the sky. Has he never seen the stars?” If I could answer them, I would say, “No, I haven’t.”

You see star gazing is a bit like sea watching – the sky is always different and constantly changing. I see a new sky each night when I stop to look upwards. What happens at that moment will never ever occur again. To the casual observer, everything looks the same, but to a star gazer like me, there’s always something that is different.

One thing remains constant though, my thankfulness to God as I am overawed by the whole experience. If the winter sky looks so expansive, wonderful, and astounding, what must God be like? That’s why a verse like today’s has great meaning for me; each time I look at the stars I think: what can compare to God in the skies above? What is most like God across the stellar heavens?

I feel full of wonder, and that’s what makes God wonderful to me. He can take a weekly routine chore and turn it into something totally amazing.

Prayer: Lord God, thank You for creating the universe and for filling it with stars. Thank You for the wonder and awe that they inspire. Continue to touch our hearts and souls with Your Creative powers. In Christ’s Holy Name, we pray. Amen.

Reflections over Stairs. Heavenly Hash, Part 6

Today's Bible Verse: Col 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

Stairs are quite a handy tool when you need to reach higher grounds without much effort! They are also quite practical in performing daily physical activities without the expensive inconveniences of athletic clubs or machinery!

Most stairs are quickly build out of wood and covered by carpet or linoleum. Some stairs however, take longer to make. Take the Queen's Staircase in the Bahamas, for example. Hundreds of slaves worked on this 102 foot staircase between 1793 and 1794. Using axes and other sharp tools, they carved 65 steps directly into the limestone! I can just imagine the sweat that was poured out over this project!

The staircase was named for Queen Victoria, to celebrate her 65 years of sovereignty - One step for each year of her reign! It provided a shorter route to and from Bennet's Hill, and it now connects Princess Margaret Hospital with Fort Fincastle, on the top of the hill.

A long alley hewed out of limestone leads to the bottom of the staircase, and the alleyway is lined by exotic vegetation with a majestic fountain just to the left, at the foot of the stairs.

I couldn't stop marvelling over the work of those who laboured on this project. Although they had no freedom, they took pride of their work and through their labour they gave glory to their Maker. I wonder if we couldn't learn a thing or two from them. Is labour, in our day and age, still performed with such attention to detail? Do we still take pride in our work? Or has the almighty dollar replace its value?

But more importantly, how am I performing my duties at work? Does my labour bring about dissatisfaction, or do I, in everything I do, work to give glory to my Creator? Remember, He is the one who painstakingly took care of not only all the details of my existence, but also all the details of my salvation!

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." (Col 3:23 NIV)

Head Home Now!

Today's Bible Verse: Ps 91:5-7 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.

Tonight as I write to you , I tell you, I am grateful to our Heavenly Father for his protection.

I was in Calgary visiting with mother and the snow had started coming down with a vengence. And even as I drove to be with mom, my head was saying, "head for home now!" Not wanting to disappoint mother, I kept driving toward the Nursing home, ignoring the good advice. I sat with mom briefly at lunch, visiting and yet feeling very antsy about the change in the weather. Finally I decided if I wanted to get home I should leave.

It took me over three and a half hours to make what should have been an hour and a half trip.

As I neared Crossfield, I began thinking of my brother Don. By now I'd been on the highways long enough to know it was going to be a slow and tense drive home. "Turn off the exit for Crossfield and sleep at Don's house," was the well advised voice in my head. "No I want to get home," I kept on thinking.

Then a hair raising event unfolded.

Just south of the Crossfield exit, a camper traveling south lost control and ended up careening across the meridian and was aimed straight at my vehicle (which of course was traveling north). I couldn't believe my eyes, as it looked as though the vehicle was riding a wild bull. It was reacting to the slope of the banks.

If I tried to apply the gas to get out of the way I could have gone into a skid. There was no place to go and nothing I could do. I could only watch mesmerized and HOPE my vehicle could get out of his way before impact. As his vehicle flew past mine (slightly behind), hunks of ice and mud from his vehicle slammed into mine.

Through my rear view I could see the next two vehicles behind me were also missed by this poor out of control driver! I have no idea what happened next as the visibility with the driving snow, was poor. I saw no crash!

For at least three minutes I was in a state of shock and just kept saying out loud, "oh my gosh!," and this over and over again. I finally recovered enough to seriously thank God for his angels.

I suddenly felt so grateful to be alive and yet sick over what may have happened to the out of control vehicle. I added a prayer for the others who may have needed it.

Apparently it was not a good thing to be on the highway and when I turned on the radio it was to hear a weather warning and the advice from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, advising travellers to stay off the highway!!

So glad to be home!! I really need to listen to those voices of mine! SMILE

Giving Up is So Easy! But is it Worth it? Heavenly Hash, Part 5

Today's Bible Verse: 1 Cor 1:9 He will never give up on you. Never forget that. (The Message)

Many cultures of our planet have traditionally been attracted to the moon. That big, yellow, shiny blob in the sky that at times is in the form of a French croissant (no wonder the French like the moon!), and at times takes the shape of a soccer ball, has always fascinated young and old.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to actually walk on the moon?

At 6:31 P.M., January 27, 1967 disaster hit Apollo 1 Command module. It had been designed to perform a 10 days orbit around the earth and if successful, the next stage would have been planned: a trip to the moon! That fateful afternoon, as astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee were going through a countdown dress rehearsal, a fire ignited near Grissom's feet. Because the space module was filled 100% with oxygen instead of the typical earth's atmosphere of 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen, the fire quickly spread with ferocious hunger. As the astronauts desperately tried to open the hatch, the temperatures inside the capsule quickly ascended to 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. Before anything could be done, Apollo 1 was a blazing ball of fire. There was no time for rescue attempts. The three astronauts died within seconds.

How easy it would have been for NASA, after this tragedy, to give up that dream of placing men on the moon. Why risk other astronauts' lives? Why spend unearthly hours for a project destined for failure? Why worry about something that was not meant to be? Was it really worth it?

They didn't give up. In fact, the opposite took place! They took the time they needed to locate the problems in that module and to rectify them. They installed a hatch that would open in 15 seconds; they removed all flammable substances from the capsule, and they adjusted the oxygen/nitrogen air mix. Ten months later, the unmanned Apollo 4 was a success. Eleven months after that the Apollo 7 crew successfully completed Apollo 1's mission. On Christmas Eve of that same year of 1968, Apollo 8 orbited the moon, and on July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong actually set foot on the moon!

If simple men can reach the moon, you can most certainly reach the stars with God's help! Giving up is an easy way out, but is it really worth it? As long as you are lined up with God's will, you will be unstoppable. Yes, opposition will arise and calamities will be caused, especially if you are joining God at work, but the Creator is above all of our circumstances!

"With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God." (Mark 10:27 NIV)

To tell you the truth, every one of our Answers2Prayer volunteers experienced terrible opposition from the evil one as soon as they join this ministry. The devil's biggest weapon? Discouragement! "Hit them where they are the weakest and they will fall apart!" Is his strategy.

He tried this on Jesus Himself, 2000 years ago, using one of his closest disciples: "From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 'Never, Lord!' He said. 'This shall never happen to you!' Jesus turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.'" (Matt 16:21-23 NIV)

Those who gave up quickly never were able to fathom the wonders that God would have performed through them. They could have reached the stars, driven by God Himself!

"So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit." (Gal 6:9 The Message)

"He will never give up on you. Never forget that." (1 Cor 1:9 The Message)

"Giving up" is music to the ears of the enemy! However we are serving One who is bigger and more powerful than all the possible obstacles that could face us!

"So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There's far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can't see now will last forever." (2 Cor 4:16-18 The Message)

May we learn from the prophet Micah and stand firm, watching attentively where God invites us to join Him in His work and reach out to those who have no hope!

"But me, I'm not giving up. I'm sticking around to see what God will do. I'm waiting for God to make things right. I'm counting on God to listen to me." (Mic 7:7 The Message

Giving up? I will make sure that it's the evil one who will give up and not me! Only through Jesus can I succeed! "Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him." (Matt 4:11 NIV)

Men can reach the moon, but we can reach the stars! Jesus is our fuel!

Been There, Done That

Today's Bible Verse: Heb 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. NIV

This afternoon I was waving my arm back and forth underwater, hoping the weightlessness and buoyancy of the pool would help heal the tendonitis. In the past, my husband has suffered with arthritic problems in his shoulders and elbows. He would wince when turning a certain way, even in his sleep. I believed him, that it really hurt. I couldn’t understand it though.

I can no longer say that, thanks to the trimming of the banana tree. The dead leaves kept getting droopier, so one morning I got out the long-handled clippers. Intrepidly, I tackled my project. Somehow I forgot about banana leaves being made of incredibly strong, fibrous material not unlike nylon. I had a good grip, twisted my forearm, and pop! I could feel the burning sensation.

It is true, you can’t understand a person until you’ve walked in his shoes. Nor can you, I think, truly trust him unless he’s ‘been there, done that’. In the Bible, it says Jesus understands everything about us. Everything. If that is so, then he has experienced all that we have. As I pondered this, the thought crossed my mind, “ I don’t think so. He lived a long time ago and there’s no way he’s gone through what I have.”

Then different stories from the bible came to mind. I thought how Jesus was shunned and rejected by not only strangers, but also by people he knew well. He was misunderstood continually, and misrepresented. He felt sadness, sorrow, and he grieved. He hurt and he got angry. He loved his mom, family, parties, his buddies. He was, at times, tempted to do wrong, perhaps even confused and unsure. And often he talked things over with his Father.

If each time there’s a twinge of pain, my memory is jogged to recall that we have a Saviour who’s “been there, done that” and I can trust

Walking in Utter Darkness. Heavenly Hash, Part 4

Today's Bible Verse: John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

"He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him." (1 John 2:11 NIV)

I had just ventured into the long, dark cave leading to the elevator that would bring me to the top of Chimney Rock in North Carolina. The cave, although slightly lit, was a bit too dark for my taste. As I continued my trek through it however, my eyes adjusted to the darkness and I was able to discern unusual rock formations.

It was very pretty, but when I finally left the cave, I was caught completely off guard by the bright sunlight that assaulted my eyes. I had to shut them against the pain, and all I could say was, "My poor eyes!" They did eventually adjust to the bright sunlight, and only then could I discern the beauty of my sunny surroundings.

I remember back a few years ago, when we used to live in Southern Arizona, my wife and I often wandered out onto the Sonora desert at night. It's amazing the little things we could notice in the obscurity of darkness. As soon as someone shone a bright light in our eyes, we were squinting away the tears. If we remained in the bright light long enough however, we eventually could open our eyes once again and notice that our perspective of our surroundings had changed dramatically: "I didn't know there was a mountain over there! And look! We were heading straight into a snake's nest!"

When we find ourselves in the middle of spiritual darkness, let's not fight away the blinding light that comes from Jesus and His Word. Let's take our time until our eyes become adjusted, because only then will we finally be able to discern spiritual matters in the true Light. Only then will our perspectives change!

We must be aware that the light of Jesus will reveal some things that we might prefer to have kept in utter darkness. But if left undealt with, these things will keep us in spiritual darkness and lead us into a life of defeat and shame.

"Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness." (1 John 2:9 NIV)

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."" (Eph 5:11-14 NIV)

It might be tempting for some to wander in the dark for a while, but hope only comes at daybreak!

Celestial Horizon!

Today's Bible Verse: 2 Cor 4:17 Our light and momentary afflictions are working for us an everlasting weight of glory that far exceeds them all.

On June 6 1944, the Allied forces landed in Normandy the coastline of France.

It remains to this day, the largest amphibious operation in history.

It was a strategic assault geared towards liberating continental Europe from the claws of Nazi Germany.

The US Army forcefully landed on the beach under heavy German firepower; the casualties were enormous.

One soldier looking around him reported to the military high command that an Allied defeat was inevitable.

A reconnaissance aircraft flying high above the warzone scanned the entire horizon. He saw the massive Allies’ reinforcement

In the sea, the diminishing German military capabilities and the fragmented Nazi supply lines due to Allied air superiority.

He smiled and reported to the high command that the Allies will carry the day.

The US soldier is like most of us. We tend to be overwhelmed by adversity that we do not see the vastness of God’s extravagance around us.

We are beclouded by the immediate and fading pain of our circumstances that we do not see the ultimate and growing gain of God’s promises.

But if we take our position in the heavenly places and see things from God’s perspective, our conclusion and response would be productive.

Whatever our tribulation might be at this moment, it is working out for our good in ways we do not know. We only need to look up

To God for fresh insight by an unremitting study of The Bible. Our present challenge is not the end of the road; the final outcome has

Been irrevocably predetermined by God in His word and this can NOT be changed.

“Our light and momentary afflictions are working for us an everlasting weight of glory that far exceeds them all.” 2 Cor 4:17

There is no other option; it is either we win or we win!!!

Florida is So Much Better! Heavenly Hash, Part 3

Today's Bible Verse: 1 Cor 15:40-41 "…looking at the diversity of bodies not only on earth but in the skies - sun, moon, stars - all these varieties of beauty and brightness." (The Message)

We were in Nassau, Bahamas, admiring the view from the bulwarks of Fort Charlotte when he approached me. He was a fellow tourist, and I found myself thinking, "This must be another fan of the beauty surrounding us!" When he uttered his first few words however, I was utterly aghast:

"This is an awful, disgusting town!"

I looked around to see if I had missed some just cause for such foul language, but couldn't find anything.

"It's so much better in Florida!"

"You must be from Florida!" I assumed aloud.

"How did you know?" He asked, surprised.

"Well…"

Then he continued with his rampage: "Why don't these people have more pride...?"

I decided to do something I'm quite good at: I began ignoring his comments, as I couldn't get a word in edgewise anyway. My wife says it's a man's trait. We can act interested, yet not hear even a word that is said. I find it's a useful tool, though it does lead to embarrassment at times…

You see, my personal experience from this tropical island was quite the opposite from this man's observations. I have never met people more proud of their country than those in the Bahamas! And I sure do love their relaxed style of living. They may not have the same standards as in Florida, but it sure has a rustic, tropical flare!

The man from Florida finally wandered away, uttering some obscenities under his breath, and peace finally returned.

How often don't we tend to complain about everything, only looking at the negative around us! We might have good cause, mind you, but have we forgotten that we live in a fallen world and that everything is tainted by sin? If we cannot enjoy the glimpses from heaven that God gives us, how can we expect to enjoy heaven itself?!

The apostle Paul urges us to enjoy the good things we have. Let's not dwell on the negative, but instead, let's fix our eyes on the blessings God has bestowed on us. There is beauty everywhere we go. We just have to look for it!

"When we see that you're just as willing to endure the hard times as to enjoy the good times, we know you're going to make it, no doubt about it." (2 Cor 1:7 The Message)

"…looking at the diversity of bodies not only on earth but in the skies - sun, moon, stars - all these varieties of beauty and brightness." (1 Cor 15:40-41 The Message)

"Discover beauty in everyone" (Rom 12:17)

In all reality, we are encouraged not to complain, but to consider others better than ourselves! Have you ever noticed that grumbling make everyone miserable?

"Friends, don't complain about each other. A far greater complaint could be lodged against you, you know." (James 5:9 The Message)

"In humility consider others better than yourselves." (Phil 2:3-4 NIV)

"Look at those beautiful trees!"

"They are sure something!"

This is music to God's ears!

Overload

Today's Bible Verse: Pro 29:18 If people can't see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves. But, when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed. (MSG)

(Based on a Teen’s Testimony)

God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. Eph 4:15 (MSG).

5:00 pm—thirty minutes before the grief session. Mike has time to phone Sarah. “Hi! How’s it going?”

“Okay, Mike. How about you?”

“Be glad when it’s done! Kids okay?”

“They’re fine, honestly. Don’t worry! Just concentrate on what you need to do, Mike.”

“Okay. Thanks for all your help, friend. I’ll pick them up as soon as I can. Bye.”

In the shopping center restroom, Mike cleans up, squeezes a pimple, convinces himself his freckles are fading, and sorts out his school bag. Delaying Tactics. His stomach gripes nervously. For the millionth time he practices what he’ll say.

Through his parents’ trial separation and his Mom working more hours, family life, school life and social life, have become the pits. Mom’s off to work by 7:30. He makes the breakfast, and lunches and walks the kids to school. No big deal, except they fight him, and he’s had to give up his morning paper route.

He brings the kids home after school. No big deal, except he doesn’t get to do the usual, end-of-the-day stuff; hang out with friends, go for a soda, kick a ball around, shoot baskets, or walk home with Sarah. They used to have great talks about heaps of subjects. Now, if he sees her at all, they only talk about his family problems.

He attempts homework, but the kids bicker and fight him some more. He told his grandparents, “I’m ashamed of my hand-in assignments and my grades; I want to be a teacher, for heaven’s sake!”

Sundays in Church, he feels like a hypocrite; he’s full of resentment waiting for his Dad to show up; mostly he doesn’t. They used to be a family that prayed together every. Whatever happened to that? Mike asks himself.

Lately he’s becoming dangerously frustrated around Caleb, Luke, and Jessica. Sometimes he’s so angry he feels he will lash out at them, but they’re just kids. Actually, he’s not much more than that himself; not seventeen yet!

So on the advice of his pastor, grandparents, and teacher; he’s decided to speak to his parents about all their futures.

Mike spots his parents at a table in the food court, their faces expressing the now familiar traces of hostility. He becomes even more determined to speak the truth about his feelings, and their responsibilities.

When Mike is done, the tension is electric. His father’s face is deathly white. His dark chocolate eyes, large and sad, look intensely at his son. His Mom’s eyes fill with tears. Moments pass, then so does the tension. Peace comes.

“I respect the man in you, Mike, his father says as he squeezes Mikes hand really tight, as if pumping life back into both of them. As he stands, he raises Mike and his Mom and draws them close; right there in the very public food court, but Mike doesn’t care. He doesn’t know what the family future will be. He just wants this hug of approval. No! The truth is he wants heaps of hugs, any kind of hugs. He’s just a kid!

When we’re bogged down in any crisis situation, especially when we are hurting, distressed, up-heaved, it is easy to lose sight of God, His Word, and His Will, and the needs of the most precious people in our lives.

We need to keep on reading God’s Word to know His Will, to know how to conduct ourselves, and to know how to love and care decently for our families, ourselves, in fact all peoples. To read God’s Word, to seek God Himself, to wait upon God for His revealed Will is the very best love we can live, and show towards all others.

PRAYER: Precious Lord, by Your Spirit, help us to desire and be determined to find Your perfect Will in Your Word everyday of our lives. In Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen and Amen.

Destination, Lighthouse! Heavenly Hash, Part 2

Today's Bible Verse: Phil 3:13-14 Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Rocks, stones and a high tide were the reason we failed. Or at least, that's what we told ourselves!

We were on Paradise Beach, located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. We were scrambling around with a heavy bag that contained our snorkelling gears, our towels, our sunscreen and anything else tourists might need while on the beach. Our destination was Hog Island Lighthouse, a picturesque lighthouse at the westerly end of Paradise Island.

We weren't progressing very quickly, however, and we blamed our lack of an appropriate pace on our heavy bag. When my youngest son decided he'd rather go snorkelling than visit the lighthouse, we gladly deposited the bag on the sand and left him as its guardian. Our progress was now much less hindered, and we quickly reached the end of Paradise Beach. The lighthouse was still a long ways off, however, and between us and it was a long section of rocky cliffs. No problem. My wife and older son are born mountain goats. They would show me the way! And we quickly covered about a third of the distance. Then we came to a section of rock that had no way around without wading. That's when we realized that the tide was rising!

I stood for a moment, looking longingly at the lighthouse. Was it really worth the trip? We wouldn't be able to go on without getting our feet wet, and there was still a long stretch of cliffs and rocks before reaching Colonial Beach on the other side. Naturally, the lighthouse was on the extreme end of the beach. What if the tide rose so significantly while we were visiting the lighthouse that it covered all of the rocks? How would we get back? Would our belongings still be there? And what about our snorkeler? Would he start to panic? We quickly determined it wasn't worth the risk, and with our tail between our legs, we began our retreat to safer ground, back in the direction we came.

We never succeeded in reaching that lighthouse. Although we blamed the cliffs and rising tide, the real reason we didn't attain our destination was that we weren't willing to leave behind our goods! (Or our son, for which he was very grateful!)

Reflecting over this incident, the following text comes to mind: "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." (Matt 13:44 NIV)

If we are not willing to get rid of all the junk that hinders us from reaching our heavenly destination, we will never get there!

Is this why many believers lead disillusioned lives? Some are standing with one foot in the church and one in the world, as they try desperately to continue nourishing their sinful appetites. Why are they leading a life of defeat? Is Jesus less real today than 2000 years ago? Or is it possible that we are not willing to let go and let God? Are our worldly passions more important than the One who died for our sins?

We cannot go on if we are sitting on the fence. We need to make a decision and be willing to part with what ultimately will hurt us for eternity: "You cannot serve God and mammon." (Matt 6:24 NKJV)

The apostle Paul urges us to burn our bridges and leave our past behind. "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Phil 3:13-14 NIV) Our focus should be on what is ahead of us: The prize that awaits us! Only then will we be filled with heavenly adrenaline! Only then will we be victorious through the One we have started to trust!

Are we willing to part with our pet sins? Are we willing to give Jesus a chance? Let us be aware that we are dealing with an enemy that wants our destruction. As partners with God, our part is to resist the one called "the father of lies" (John 8:44), resist when temptation looms, realizing that it is not to the best of our interest. "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings." (1 Peter 5:8)

That is our only part: Resist the evil one and start trusting the One who willingly died for our sins! Only then will we truly experience God's grace and victory. Only then will we wonder why we even struggled with those disgusting distractive evil insignificances of our life.

"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast." (1 Peter 5:10 NIV)

Good Brakes

Today's Bible Verse: 2 Corinthians chapter 10: 5b We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

My husband and I were walking down a street in downtown Los Angeles. The traffic was a steady flow interrupted now and then by vehicles zooming in and out of the lanes. It made me thankful that I wasn't driving. We were just about to step across an access lane when a car zoomed out and into the traffic. A shiny new BMW slammed on its brakes as the vehicle came within inches of its bumper. My husband shook his head. "Thank God for good brakes," he said. If the BMW had collided with that vehicle we would very likely have been in the middle of the domino effect that would have resulted.

In His wisdom, God has supplied us with another kind of good braking system. It's called a mind. The apostle Paul talks about it in 2 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 5b - "... we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."

The trick is to recognize when our thoughts are going in a direction that is not obedient to Christ. Too often we get caught up in thinking negative and even destructive thoughts. But we can change them. We can stop, as quickly as that shiny BMW, avoid disaster and turn our thoughts to things that honour God. It's a matter of training. And it's amazing how well it works.

Paul also told the Philippians "... whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things" (Phil. 4:8).

Have you caught yourself being negative lately, or having nasty thoughts about someone? Have you noticed how it affects your whole day? God knew that it would, so he designed our minds with a good braking system - the ability to channel our thoughts toward all that is good. Ultimately that will lead us to Him.

Are you Sure you Want to go Back to the U.S.? Heavenly Hash, Part 1

Today's Bible Verse: John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

We had no difficulty whatsoever getting into the Bahamas. We had one passport check, we waited an hour for our luggage to arrive, and we were off! Leaving this beautiful country, however, was a completely different story!

First we had the usual baggage check, after which we had to carry all of our luggage to an identity check. Here we were permitted to drop our belongings on a conveyor belt, and we could only hope that the belt was not heading to an incinerator!

A Bahamian security check later, we were facing long lines at US Immigration where our passports were minutely examined. After this, we had to go through another security check, this time conducted by the US. I guess they were concerned that the Bahamians had overlooked something!

With our shoes back on, we thought we could head directly to our plane, however three more checks were expecting us: a gate check, a Bahamian pre-boarding check and a U.S. pre-boarding check. No wonder our plane tickets were so expensive! When we finally sat in our plane seats, we couldn't help but wonder if we were on the right plane. All these check points had made our head spin!

It is true that sometimes the way to heaven also seems confusing. So many hindrances come our way, trying to prevent us from attaining our destination. But in all reality the way is easier than we may think. It's just that we let our circumstances distract us from our destination!

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6 NIV)

When we start to think that it is all about us, then we are headed in the wrong direction. That is when we are confronted by a myriad of check points that stamp the passport of our life with the words FAILURE and NOT APPROVED! We battle sinful temptations, and they seem to be overwhelming us, conquering the core of our soul, as they stick their nasty heads into every orifice of our lives. Relationships seem to sizzle out, growing icy cold, which leads to unforgiveness, divorce and alienation. "How can this be? I am trying to head in the right direction! Why is this happening to me?"

When we think it is all about us, it is completely normal to emphasize the "I" and the "me", and follow "religious" dogma, rules and regulations to obtain heaven. It is also completely normal to look down at others who are not performing as well as - well let us be frank here - as well as "us"! But woe to us, when it is the other way around and others are criticising us!

Is it possible we are focusing on the wrong person?

"He (Jesus) told his next story to some who were complacently pleased with themselves over their moral performance and looked down their noses at the common people: "Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax man. The Pharisee posed and prayed like this: 'Oh, God, I thank you that I am not like other people - robbers, crooks, adulterers, or, heaven forbid, like this tax man. I fast twice a week and tithe on all my income.' Meanwhile the tax man, slumped in the shadows, his face in his hands, not daring to look up, said, 'God, give mercy. Forgive me, a sinner.'" (Luke 18:9-13 The Message)

Notice how the Pharisee stresses the "I" and the tax man rather stresses "God". Who went home justified?

"Jesus commented, 'This tax man, not the other, went home made right with God. If you walk around with your nose in the air, you're going to end up flat on your face, but if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.'" (Luke 18:14 The Message)

My passport permitted me to pass every check point at the airport without too much hassle. But was it because of my picture, or maybe my name? Would I have been able to pass and board the plane as easily if I had an Iranian passport or even a Cuban passport? Isn't it the word "Canadian" that let me through every hindrance on my way to the plane?

The same is true with our passport to heaven. Our name is valueless! All of our good deeds will never obtain us salvation! However Jesus' name, the Name of the One who covers our heavenly passport with His blood, is what permits us access to the heavenly realm!

"Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It's God's gift from start to finish! We don't play the major role. If we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving." (Eph 2:8-10 The Message)

It is not about us, it's about Jesus! If we do not have victory over sin, is it possible that we rely more on ourselves rather than on Jesus? If relationships break apart around us, who is our emphasis, "I" or Jesus?

Only One can guarantee us freedom: the One who is called "the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6)

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32 NIV)

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36-37 NIV)

Only through Jesus can we be unhindered in our walk towards our heavenly destination!

"May I see your passport?"

"Which one?"

"You have more than one? Please step aside…"

Pleasing Which Boss?

Today's Bible Verse: Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

"But, Ron, there isn't time or room for a longer pipe there," I said. "Why can't we just leave it the way it is?" Anger welled up inside me. The work area was governed by both county and city regulations which did not always agree. As the job superintendent, I'm caught between the two sets of them. With my boss pressuring me to get the job done on time, the frustration was building. I knew Ron well. He was only trying to do the job right according to his instructions, but that didn't fix my current problem.

"John, you may be able to turn the hydrant 90 degrees to make the longer pipe fit," he suggested.

I hadn't thought of that. His idea reminded me of the drawing I had in my truck. As we walked to the truck, Ron said, "You know, John, you have a boss to please, I have a boss to please, and sometimes they are in conflict. But as Christians, we both have someone higher to please. Let's you and I pray together and get our guidance from Him."

Afterwards, with the engineering drawing and our pooled experience, we worked out a solution, decided what materials we needed, and I left to get them. I realized how close I had come to taking out my frustrations on my godly brother, but instead, through him, we turned to God, who had met both our needs.

Prayer: Loving Father, please help us to remember to come to You first with every need we have. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Walking on Troubled Water

Today's Bible Verse: Matt 19:26 With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

I grew up on the Belgium coast, on the body of water that serves as a natural border between Belgium and Great Britain, my beloved North Sea. The weather where I lived is generally much milder than where I now live, especially in the winter time! However there was one winter of my childhood that I will never forget…

It was 1963, and I was just four years old. Western Europe was severely hit that January by more than twenty-five air frosts (This occurs when the temperature of air goes below 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit), making it the coldest winter since 1740. Extremely frigid temperatures were recorded, and then the unthinkable happened: the coast of the North Sea froze! I can still remember standing on the dyke and looking out over mile after mile of frozen waves. No water was visible anywhere! I was tempted to go out on the frozen water and walk on it. I wasn't allowed to do so, however. After all, I was only 4 years old!

Although it was seriously cold that January, the beauty of the frozen sea had me mesmerized. There is beauty even in harsh weather conditions!

Peter also had the opportunity to walk on water. His water, however, was not frozen! In fact, the lake on which his small boat found itself was experiencing heavy and tumultuous winds. Miraculously, Jesus appeared from one corner of the lake, and beyond the possible, ignoring the ravaging storm, he walked on the water.

Naturally, Peter was tempted to walk on the water as well, and when invited to do so, he couldn't decline. And he succeeded! He walked on water! Until he took his eyes off of Jesus, that is, and began concentrating on the swells instead! And when he did, he started to sink: "But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" (Matt 14:30 NIV)

The beautiful thing is, Jesus reached out and saved him, even though it was Peter's own fault that he found himself in trouble.

Peter discovered beauty in storms that day. But only as long as he kept his eyes on his Master!

We are experiencing heavy, frigid winds in our world right now. They are affecting our economy, our housing, our means of living. Inflation, as well as unemployment, are on the rise. Desperation is hitting an all time high, as well as sleeplessness and anxiety. May I encourage us not to focus our attention on the frigid circumstances around us. Instead, let us turn our eyes on our Lord and Saviour. When we are able to center our concentration on Him, we will notice beauty, even amidst our turmoil. That's when the peace of God that surpasses any understanding will fill our inner selves. Beyond a doubt, we will realize that we are not alone out there. We are not at the mercy of the elements. Jesus is there, right next to us, holding us tenderly in His arms, crying with our pain. He will lead us to solid ground and will continue to sustain us.

"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matt 19:26 NIV)

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Phil 4:6-7 NIV)

Our economic and political waters might be quite troubled these days, but with God on our side we will rise up victorious! We will end up walking on our problems! All we have to do is to fix our eyes on the Master and discover His beauty!

"Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed - that exhilarating finish in and with God - he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!" (Heb 12:2-3 The Message)

Peanut Butter And Other Joyous Things

Today's Bible Verse: Psalm 92:1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O most High. (ESV)

When my son Isaac was only two years old, every morning, I would ask him what he wanted for breakfast, and he would shout, "Peanut butter!" And when I said "Yes", he would jump around the kitchen yelling "Yeah, peanut butter! Yeah, peanut butter!" At lunch, the same question would elicit the same response, and again, much leaping and dancing and yelling. Each time, his face would light up. It was great to see.

For those not affected by nut allergies, could there be anything simpler in life than peanut butter?

Yet, as much as I enjoy peanut butter, I don't remember a time when the thought of a peanut butter sandwich would make me want to sing and dance.

As adults, how often do we let the simple things that could bring us joy pass us by because we are too tired or too busy? How often we forget to thank God for the simple pleasures, the everyday things that are really small miracles in disguise!

When I am feeling low or overwhelmed, I often sit down and have a peanut butter sandwich, and recall a small boy's joy in the face of the everyday, and pray, "Thank You, God, for peanut butter and other joyous things."

Prayer: Father God, thank You for small boys who have not forgotten how to find joy in everyday miracles. Please help to keep our eyes open so we can also see the miracle in everyday things that we often take for granted. Amen.

As I read through Jer. 8:10-12, I can't help but wonder: Is this the age Jeremiah was describing? "From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace. Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush." (Jer 8:10-12 NIV)

Are we closer to the end than we think? "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold…" (Matt 24:12 NIV)

Let us not forget that we are Christians, and as Christians we are followers of the Christ! "…but he who stands firm to the end will be saved." (Matt 24:13 NIV)

Jesus' mission was a mission of pure love and He entrusts us to follow in His steps: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35 NIV)

What would be our headline in the paper if journalists found out about the "real" us? Are we any better than the world?
